Commodity Chat With Trader Jim! (tm) with Jim Prince with Jim Prince
from 08/11/2009

Jim Prince Says:

Hello and good evening! Trader Jim here. . .

Thanks for spending your time with me and your fellow GBE Course Members this evening!

The Foods have been on fire the last couple of weeks! The big mover, of course, has been Sugar! But Coffee has also made a nice run and Orange Juice is beating the bears to a pulp! (LOL)

And another HUGE mover of late has been October Lean Hogs. Wow! It's gone hog wild to the downside! And to top it off we had entries triggered in Corn recently too.

I also should mention that for the most part just about all of the markets mentioned above were (or are) featured in my nightly Premium Alert Service™ (PAS) videos.

Just a reminder that the summer time is very often the slowest time of the year for trading opportunities because so many traders are on vacation etc. Thus, it's our job as traders to trade what we see and not what we think! In other words, try to find the best opportunities available. Other wise, we should sit on our hands and wait for setups to materialize.

I encourage you to freely share any of your recent paper trading or real money market endeavors. Discussing your trading experiences lets others know they are not alone in this business, and it's a great way for everyone to learn from one another.

Discussing your market experiences lets others know they are not alone in this business. So please feel free to share your excitement, enthusiasm, and dedication. It provides others hope and optimism of what's to come.

I'd like send a big "Thank You" to Ken Roberts. Ken started introducing folks to the Greatest Business on Earth™ over 20 years ago. I was fortunate enough to not only be a student of Ken's, but I also had the great pleasure to work for him for 12+ years. I'm happy to be able to share with you what I've learned over the years.

As we begin this evening's session, remember the reason these monthly chats are conducted is to provide you the opportunity to ask questions and to pick the brain of a 20+ year student of the markets.

It's not the best use of our limited time here together for me to define basic terms and explain introductory principles taught in your Course materials. Please contact one of our Course Counselors if you need assistance with any of the introductory principles. They can be reached at 541-955-2885. This chat is the time for you to use me to help you apply the basics you're learning and to prepare you for what to expect once you're out in the market itself (either paper trading or with real money). And if we have some fun and laughter along those lines, so much the better.

NOTE!!! When commenting on one of the GBE strategies or US Charts, please identify WHICH STRATEGY AND/OR MARKET you used. Also, when relating trading experiences and/or results, please provide details: Futures contracts, options, option strike prices, options AND futures, real money or paper trading, and contract month etc. This really helps your fellow Course Members follow along and learn from your experiences.

From time-to-time you may notice that I'll use a bit of "chat short-hand." If you see LOL for example, it means Laughing Out Loud. Or TS which means Trend Seeker. These are the two most prominent bits of short hand you'll see me use.

yogii asks (6:06:38 PM):

Hi Jim, The "S" for the settle price has not been used for awhile now on the charts. Any thoughts on bringing it back?

Jim Prince Says:

Hi yogi! It's listed on many markets but not for very long. Remember, the markets will switch to the eveing session rather quickly. To see the "S" be sure to move over to the "Pit" prices. That said, I'll double-check with our progammers to see if there's something else going on.

Thanks for joining me tonight.

wallo220 asks (6:07:54 PM):

I am completely new to any of this but I was reading the manual and it talks about going short. I thought shortselling was outlawed after this last stock market debacle

Jim Prince Says:

Not at all, wallo220. Shor selling is completly legal in the commodity markets --  and encouraged! It's part of the beauty of this business.

Good question and thanks for stopping by tonight.

michael buford asks (6:09:37 PM):

I really like the strong 1 is it okay to just trade with that.

Jim Prince Says:

It surely is, michael buford! In fact, it's easy to use and can many times get you in right at the begining of a major trend!

I'm also working on adding a different approach to the Strong 1. . . and may add it to a DVD.

Anyway, use it to your hearts content!

pjjfh asks (6:11:12 PM):

Are you going to have another in house class coming up?

Jim Prince Says:
Hi pjjfh! Yes, we're going to hold one more Trading Camp this year. We'll be announcing it in a couple weeks. Keep an eye on your email box all the details!

Jim Prince Says:

Tonight we are doing things a bit differently. During this evening's chat I will integrate the use of a really neat educational software platform. This software will allow you to see my desktop, hear my voice, and watch as I provide tips and insights, and it all be in real time!

First, be sure to stay logged into this chat because we'll be switching back and forth between chat rooms.

Next, to follow along with me in our new room you'll need to open another browser window and type the following link into your browser:

http://dimdim.uschartco.com

When you arrive at the above page click the "Join Room" button. Then type: GBECHAT in the Room Name box. You can also enter your "chat name" in the appropriate box.

Then click the Join button and you'll enter the room.

See you there!

Jim Prince Says:

I'm going to answer the next question via our new audio chat software. Please follow the instructions that were just posted and join me in the other room.

Jim Prince Says:

Well folks as often happens during a live show, we are having technical difficulties with the new software. I guess it doesn't matter how many times you test the software, things can still go wrong.

So for now, we'll resume the chat right here.

Ben in Austin asks (6:26:22 PM):

Jim--I think I heard you say earlier this year that in June or July a movie or DVD was to be released called "Floored" about the Pits in Chicago. Can you shed any light on this or am I loosing it? LOL

Jim Prince Says:
Hey Ben in Austin! The movie is done from my understanding. The Producer is now looking for $$$$ to distribute the movie. If you Goggle "Floored the movie" you'll find the web site and all the details there.

Sarah asks (6:27:30 PM):

Jim I have been wondering about your views on the overnight trading. Do you use this time or do you typically wait for the morning session.John.

Jim Prince Says:
Hi Sarah, I typically place all my orders during the day sessions. However, as more and more volume creeps into the evening sessions I think I might be doing more trading there in the future. Time will tell.

keith in chicago asks (6:28:59 PM):

Coffee and OJ look like they are ready for the low-ball entry, they have 10 days left (Sept) or is that too skinny ?

Jim Prince Says:
Really not enough time left, keith in chicago. Good idea though but the ideal scenario would be to have 25-30 days remaining.

Edie in Tucson asks (6:31:33 PM):

What is Strong 1?

Jim Prince Says:
It's one of our strategies, Edie in Tucson. You can find it by going here: http://www.gbemembers.com/members/strong1.php

pjjfh asks (6:33:57 PM):

I have a buy order in for corn. I've missed my price twice. I feel like I'm running around after it. Any advice here?

Jim Prince Says:

Yep, don't! It's the worst thing you can do. Let the market come to you, never force a trade. Other wise you'll be the one left holding the bad so to speak.

Keep your order where you originally placed it. If it doesn't get filled, move on to the next opportunity.

Jim Prince Says:

OK, folks we're going to give the other chat software another try.

So, if you'd be so kind and follow the instructions that were posted a few minutes ago, it would be much appreciated.

You'll want to go to: dimdim.uschartco.com

swifty asks (6:37:03 PM):

what are your thoughts about Gold?

Jim Prince Says:
Very choppy right now. It's in the middle of a pennant formation and Trend Seeker says the trend is up. I'll keep watching for a close above the top of the upper trend line of the pennant to trigger an entry.

Jim Prince Says:

Well the other chat software crash again. We are going to try it one more time. I appreciate your patience. We'll get this right, but right now something technical is not being our friend this evening.

swifty asks (6:43:20 PM):

Do you always set "Stops", using a 2:1, risk/reward ratio?

Jim Prince Says:

99.9% of the time that's the case swifty! The correct math is vitally important to get "on your side." If you don't, you're always fighting an up hill battle.

By the way, 2:1 is the minimum risk/reward ratio. I prefer a higher one whenever possible.

Cathy Taylor asks (6:45:50 PM):

Hi Jim, I watched your "Analyzing Market Top Down" regarding the beans. Really enjoyed it and will definately be using this tool in the future and watching for the daily charts to turn to an "UP" TS ranking. Thanks for all you do.

Jim Prince Says:
Thanks Cathy Taylor! Glad you enjoyed the video. It's a great way to get a big picture perspective on the market in question.

Jim Prince Says:

Well folks, we think we've figured out the buy in the other voice chat software. So we're working to get it fixed. Once we do, we'll try to restart it.

New York Guy asks (6:48:00 PM):

In a sideways moving market like the Eurodollar, what option spread strategy would you feel works best?

Jim Prince Says:
That's what the Neutral Market Strategy was built for New York Guy. Find it here: http://www.gbemembers.com/members/nm_strategy.php

solidone99 asks (6:50:34 PM):

Do you think OJ too thinly traded for real $?

Jim Prince Says:
Not at all solidone99! But it can be very volatile. So you have to keep stops or simply trade OJ with options. But there is plenty of open interest and volume to trade this market. Compare it to Pork Bellies and you'll see what I mean. Pork Bellies is a market I won't touch because it's thinly traded.

LJ from Oswego asks (6:52:32 PM):

Hello Jim, With the sharp climb of sugar when do you look to find the right signals to short the sugar market?

Jim Prince Says:

Only when the trend has changed,  LJ from Oswego. Remember, the trend is your friend until it ends!

Folks that have been shorting this market the last couple weeks are hurting big time. However, those that are long are doing great!

Once a formation developes and Trend Seeker says the trend is down, that's when I'll look to take a position to the downside.

Jim Prince Says:

Third time a charm?

We're going to give the other chat software another try.

So, if you'd be so kind and follow the instructions that were posted a few minutes ago, it would be much appreciated.

You'll want to go to: dimdim.uschartco.com

esmith asks (7:00:06 PM):

Hi Jim Here a couple of real money trades over the last couple of weeks. Hgu9 copper got long just above the high on 7/31 at 263.50 (breakout) exited on 8/6/ market at resistance for $ 2550.00 SBV9 Sugar entered just above the high on 7/24 18.51 market closing above resistance breaking out, raised my stop tonight to 21.95. The markets getting volatile and could not break yesterdays high. I expect to be out when the market starts trading. I am happy with approx $3852.00. Thats approx 6k this month. Hope this helps some of the new traders see what can happen.

Jim Prince Says:

Sweet! Way to go esmith! Thanks for sharing your trades with us. Folks, just goes to show you that fellow Course Members are out there doing it!

Jim Prince Says:

Folks, the other chat software is now working perfectly on our side. So if you're having trouble logging into the audio chat, please start over with the login instructions posted below.

raftrdude asks (7:31:38 PM):

Michael, question made me wonder, is it best to stay with a few strategies or try to master them all when you're starting out?

Jim Prince Says:

Hey raftrdude! Currently the one long-term approach I teach is encompassed in the Grain Report. Other wise, my approach is more what I like to consider "position trading." We are typically in trades from 1 day (which is rare) to 60+ days.

Thanks for your question.

Tradetracker asks (7:34:06 PM):

Hi Jim! Can you explain all this talk about the Government limiting certain types of trading in commodities especially the energies? Thank you

Jim Prince Says:

I typically don't watch or listen to the news so I'm not totally up to speed on this. But from what I do know that a lot of what they are chatting about is in regards to the big firms that trade those markets. In other words, it's not the "little" guy.

Anyway, I don't worry about these things. They are out of my control. I'd rather put my time in studying charts!

PecuniousMaximus asks (7:35:48 PM):

Hello Trader Jim!I know day and night trading sessions occur in different time periods. Do the futures and options markets have different time periods? (Example corn futures versus corn options) Thanks.

Jim Prince Says:
Typically PecuniousMaximus the options trade along side the futures markets. There may be some exceptions in regards to the overnight markets. Be sure to check with your broker for details.

floridajeff asks (7:38:23 PM):

can i still participate as i did earlier in the chat or do i have to pay addn fees to dim dim in order to follow along ?

Jim Prince Says:

You can still participate floridajeff. No charge. Just go on over to the other room. I'll begin there again in a moment.

For those still having trouble. Refresh your browser, or reload it altogether. Or try an alternate browser.
